My Experience in Washington, DC

David Chan visited Washington, DC to attend a group bar admission ceremony and filed the following.

Two weeks ago Christine and I went to Washington, DC for a group bar admission ceremony. Although I do not expect to practice before that tribunal on behalf of a client, yet like most of my contemporaries I consider it a blessing of good fortune to be selected. This time we were presented by four law school alumni groups and a few individuals totaling 83. After the ceremony we were treated to a reception and were visited by the Chief Justice Roberts and Associated Justice Ruth Ginsberg. There were 20 from my law school alumni association and we were also visited by Associated Justice Sonia Sotomayor. I am impressed with her humble beginning and high achievement admidst adversity. I have read her book “My Beloved World” describing her struggle from poverty to graduating from Princeton and also Yale Law School with flying colors, in spite of juvenile diabetes. I was fortunate to speak with her a bit and she impressed me as very down to earth and friendly. I also met two classmates from my graduation class of ’87. We are much older and hopefully wiser now, and admittedly I am the oldest of the 3. We also toured the Capitol and the WH. Although we went there during the big freeze we were able to gingerly walk down Constitutions Ave and visited the Washington & Lincoln Memorials. Because Christine and I only stayed for 5 days and there are so much more to see, I think we will return for a real sightseeing trip in the future. Henceforth as a member of the Supreme Court Bar we can attend most oral arguments as audience per seating availability. One regret is that the Chinese food in Chinatown there is not up to bar, not even as good as our backward Dallas. We later found out that as most Chinese residents have moved to the suburbs, one has to go to nearby Maryland or Virginia for better Chinese cuisine. We will be smarter next time.
